That’s going to sound like heresy to some people, and I get it. I still think a good foregrip — I’ve talked before about how much I like the BCM MOD3 — is a legitimately useful tool if you know how to use it correctly. This isn’t a takedown of the accessory itself. It’s what I’ve learned from testing different hand pressures under aggressive, fast shooting, and where a foregrip quietly works against you instead of for you.

Before we even get to grip, the biggest lever for controlling recoil has nothing to do with your support hand. It’s how fully you seat the stock into your shoulder pocket.
I see this constantly in carbine classes: guys who “toe in” the stock versus guys who fully encompass it in the shoulder pocket produce dramatically different results downrange. If the stock isn’t fully seated, you’re giving the gun an out — the buffer and spring have nowhere productive to send that energy, and the dot jumps all over the place. You might not see it on camera, but you’ll absolutely see it through the optic.
Get the shoulder mount right first. Everything else is secondary.

Where the foregrip actually hurts you
Once your mount is solid, here’s the problem I kept running into with a foregrip: it gives you the ability to steer the gun left and right, and under recoil, most people use that ability whether they mean to or not. Small pressures even with your fingers right and left can greatly affect how the gun behaves in recoil.
The typical pattern looks like this — you get a 12 o’clock or 1 o’clock muzzle rise, and as you pull the gun back and down with a foregrip, you overcorrect. That overcorrection shows up as shots drifting left on follow-ups as a right handed shooter, especially at speed. You’re not fighting the gun’s natural recoil impulse anymore; you’re fighting your own oversteering.
What I want instead is dead simple: pull the gun straight back into the shoulder using linear pressure, elbows in tight, same pressure every time, and let the gun return to neutral on its own. It’s got a spring system built specifically for that job. Let it work.

What I actually do with my support hand now
Instead of gripping a foregrip, I “dinner plate” the rail — flat hand, fingers wrapped loosely, pressure directed slightly toward the magazine rather than side to side. That small shift locks things into place without giving me the leverage to oversteer. The pull is straight back into the shoulder, not side to side with the support arm.
I tested this head-to-head at 25 yards shooting doubles into A-zone targets — a genuinely unforgiving test, since any small inconsistency shows up immediately at that distance. With a bad mount and an oversteering grip, I lost rounds over the shoulder entirely. With a full shoulder pocket and a flat, minimal-pressure support hand, groups tightened up noticeably — in my case, significantly better than when I was gripping the rail the way I used to (c clamp, with a BCM MOD3).
The bigger issue I see in class isn’t a lack of control. It’s the opposite: people overcontrol the rifle. Because you can pull the trigger faster with a rifle than with a pistol, you often don’t feel yourself oversteering in real time — it just feels good — and then you walk downrange and find a string of hits drifting left in the C-zone. In a recent class we had a significant portion of the class running foregrips. I spent a good portion of the morning removing them upon student’s requests and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. We don’t just tell student’s, we actually show them so they can feel and see it for themselves.

Try this yourself
If you want to test this on your own rifle, here’s the drill: stop wrapping your hand around the rail or foregrip entirely. Just support it flat, dinner-plate style, and pay attention to where your rounds land. Watch specifically for shots going low and left — that’s the oversteering signature. Then compare it against a full shoulder-pocket mount with linear, straight-back pressure and minimal support-hand input.
The Caveat
None of this means a foregrip is useless. For precision work — smaller or partially obstructed targets at distance, where you need a crisp, controlled trigger press rather than raw speed — a stable forward grip still earns its place. This is specifically about aggressive, fast shooting, where I’ve found less support-hand pressure and a better shoulder mount beat a foregrip every time.

Pay attention to what your hands are doing to the gun, not just what your eyes are doing on the target — that’s usually where the real answer is hiding.
