We've had real time behind both the Lead and Steel PB3 and the newer PBK, and after talking directly with the guys who build them and putting rounds downrange on both, we wanted to lay out our honest take — what the engineering is striving for, and how that translates once you're running the optic in a professional or private setting.

Why the PB3 exists

Before we get into how it shoots, it’s worth understanding the problem Lead and Steel was actually trying to solve. In a conversation with their team, the motivation behind the PB3 came down to one thing: not wanting to present a pistol and then go hunting for the dot. The goal was for target acquisition to be close to subconscious.

The engineering solution is a top-mounted emitter, which is essentially the inverse orientation of a standard red dot. The objective lens sits angled inward, catching light fired from the top rather than the bottom — the same basic principle as their LP1 rifle optic, just flipped. The payoff is a larger viewing window and bigger glass without giving up runtime compared to the Acro P2, and without the size compromises you’d take on with something like a Steiner.

One design detail worth flagging for anyone running an optics-ready duty gun: the PB3 uses the standard Acro footprint, milled into a Jagerwerks slide, and Lead and Steel makes their own adapter — the Ghost Adapter Plate — that bolts onto a standard RMR footprint. That means if you’re already running an open emitter optic like the SRO and want to move to a closed emitter, you’re not locked into buying a Trijicon RCR to get there. The adapter plate encapsulates the same footprint at the same height and depth as a direct-mill setup, so there’s no compromise in how high the optic sits over bore. The same adapter system works for MOS-pattern Glocks, too — effectively two footprints covered by one housing.

On glass quality: rather than running the heavy blue-tinted notch filter you’ll notice on some competing optics, Lead and Steel dialed that back for a cleaner sight picture, since they’re not burning as much power through the system to begin with. It’s a small thing, but it matters once you’re comparing dot clarity side by side.

Running the PB3 in the field

With the nerdy engineering explanation out of the way, let’s talk about how it functions.

Glass clarity was the first thing that stood out. Coming from a Holosun 509T and prior experience with SROs and RMRs, the difference in blue hue was immediately noticeable. That tint isn’t a dealbreaker on other optics, but it does add a layer of visual contrast against the world around you that isn’t normally there — and it becomes more noticeable in bright light or high-contrast environments. The PB3’s glass is close to true clear, with only a slight blue hue near the bottom edge.

The dot itself is cleaner, too. For a shooter with astigmatism, this mattered more than expected. Instead of the usual starburst effect that scatters the dot into a smear, the PB3 produced a tight, solid circle — the kind of clarity you’d normally only expect to see recording the dot through a camera lens, which doesn’t have an astigmatism to contend with. The starburst effect isn’t totally removed for me, but if I am outside in the sunlight, it is virtually non-existent. 

Size is a real tradeoff, but a justified one. The PB3’s housing is unmistakably a “mailbox style” optic — about 30% larger glass than the Aimpoint Acro, with a battery pack that sits off to one side. That’s simply the cost of an enclosed emitter with drop-tested durability; the RCR and other closed-emitter competitors carry the same bulk. For a full-size duty gun, it didn’t feel oversized, and with proper visual focus during presentation, the housing wasn’t distracting.

The battery housing took a small adjustment. Version one of the PB3 had a battery pack that protruded further to the side, which could interfere with thumb placement on the draw. Version two cleaned this up with a ramped transition into the battery pack, and that ramp actually became a useful reference point — a spot to anchor the support-hand thumb consistently on every presentation. It took some reps to find, but once it clicked, it made the draw more repeatable, not less.

Durability was the whole point all along. This isn’t a competition optic, and it isn’t trying to be. SROs are excellent for their intended use, but they’re not built to survive a drop onto concrete, and a single raindrop landing on an open emitter can wash out the entire sight picture with a flash of red. For duty and SWAT use, that’s not an acceptable failure mode. An enclosed emitter design solves both problems, and after extended testing, the PB3 has become the go-to duty optic of choice for our team.

Enter the PBK: same philosophy, smaller footprint

The PBK is Lead and Steel’s answer for shooters who want the enclosed-emitter benefits of the PB3 without the larger mailbox-style housing — a natural fit for slimmer carry guns like the P365 or Glock 48, though it holds up well on a full-size gun too.

Compared to the PB3, the PBK gives up some battery life (roughly 18,000 hours versus 30,000) and window size, but the tradeoff is a meaningfully smaller, flatter profile. Even scaled down, the window still comes in larger than an Aimpoint COA — 20mm x 15mm versus 15mm x 15mm — while running flush against the slide thanks to the same Ghost Adapter Plate system used on the PB3. That flush mounting means no need to swap to aftermarket suppressor-height iron sights just to co-witness.

After a few months running the PBK as a daily carry optic on a Gen 5 Glock 45, the dot has been just as easy to acquire as on the PB3, with the same reduced blue hue and the same reliable zero retention — no drift noticed between the two optics under testing.

The bottom line

Both optics solve the same core problem — durability and target acquisition speed without the fragility of an open emitter — just at different sizes. The PB3 makes sense when you want maximum window real estate for duty use. The PBK is the better call if you’re prioritizing concealment on a slimmer everyday carry pistol, without giving up the enclosed-emitter durability that makes the platform worth trusting in the first place.

Lead and Steel is a smaller, domestic-focused optics company, and it shows in the amount of engineering thought that’s gone into solving real problems — footprint compatibility, glass clarity, drop durability — rather than just chasing spec-sheet numbers. Both the PB3 and PBK have earned a place in daily and duty use going forward.
